Choosing
an ISP (Internet Service Provider)
To get
Internet access you need:
- A computer
(or TV and WebTV box on some cable systems)
- A modem
- A physical
connection (phone line, DSL, cable, etc.)
- An ISP
Where
to find an ISP
- Local
computer publications
- Phone
company
- Newspapers
- Word of
mouth from satisfied customers
Considerations
- Cost
- Free
- from NetZero, Bluelight,
and others. You will have to endure advertising banners to pay for
the service. Be sure you have a local access number.
- Regional
- check local advertising (usually $10-$25 per month)
- National
- like America Online or MSN (usually $20+, tends to be more trouble-free)
- Make sure
there is a toll free access number
- Technical
Support
- Be
sure you can get help when you need it!
- Can
you talk to a live person?
- Software
Available (on CD) - If you're not already connected, it is essential
that you have the software needed on CD.
- Reliability
- Not all ISP's are equal. Ask around for satisfied customers. Is the
connection fast? Do you have trouble getting connected?
- Established
Company - This is still the early years of ISP's. Many local companies
go out of business without warning.
