Baby Steps Through Cyberspace
Step 5: Getting Connected

Choosing an ISP (Internet Service Provider)

To get Internet access you need:

  • A computer (or TV and WebTV box on some cable systems)
  • A modem
  • A physical connection (phone line, DSL, cable, etc.)
  • An ISP

Where to find an ISP

  • Local computer publications
  • Phone company
  • Newspapers
  • Word of mouth from satisfied customers

Considerations

  • Cost
    • Free - from NetZero, Bluelight, and others. You will have to endure advertising banners to pay for the service. Be sure you have a local access number.
    • Regional - check local advertising (usually $10-$25 per month)
    • National - like America Online or MSN (usually $20+, tends to be more trouble-free)
  • Make sure there is a toll free access number
  • Technical Support
    • Be sure you can get help when you need it!
    • Can you talk to a live person?
  • Software Available (on CD) - If you're not already connected, it is essential that you have the software needed on CD.
  • Reliability - Not all ISP's are equal. Ask around for satisfied customers. Is the connection fast? Do you have trouble getting connected?
  • Established Company - This is still the early years of ISP's. Many local companies go out of business without warning.
