Can you imagine computers being a lot faster than they are now, or using a system than can provide you with measurements three times more precise than anything available today?
Well right now Mitchell, along with Professor Aephraim Steinberg have found a way to combine three photons into one. This is something that has never been done before. They managed to get three photons with three different polarizations, and combine them to make a three-photon state. However, not all of their trials worked out. They were actually only successful 58% of the time.
With this new technology we can invent quantum computers, which are very fast computers that work according to principles of quantum mechanics. This means that they can provide information on microscopic particles such as photons and atoms.
Because of this discovery there is a possibility that scientists could someday entangle a larger amount of photons. This could lead to a huge jump in technology as well as new discoveries in both the computer and medical fields. Not to mention useful ways to help discover the measurement of gravitational waves, and the structure of atoms.
This is the link were I got my information, as well as a cool picture of the machine they used to combine the photons.
