Thousands of blogs are created every day. Here are a few of note:

  • Blog for America - Howard Dean used technology, particularlly this blog, to change the way political campaigns are run and almost captured the Democratic nomination.
  • Instapundit - A powerful force in journalism with over 120,000 visitors a day.
  • Where is Raed? - Iraqi citizens Raed and Salam post about goings on in Iraq. This blog has led to a movie deal and more net coverage like this and this.
  • BoingBoing - Notice all the sponsor links...what does that tell you?
  • One Trick Cyber-Pony - Blog from WebQuest guru, Bernie Dodge

Blog Hosting Services

    • Blogger - One of the first and biggest, now owned by Google. We will use Blogger to host our workshop blog. Blogger also provides free hosting at it's Blogspot site.
    • Xanga - Very popular with the teen and college crowd. Wondering what teens are into...it's all here...it's scary.
    • LiveJournal - Another popular and solid blog provider and hosting service.
    • BlogDrive - Powerful and clean...and free.
    • Bloglines - If you want to read lots of blogs, but don't have time to check them all...then Bloglines is for you. Bloglines allows you to read all the new posts from one location using RSS.

  • Movable Type - A powerful (and free to schools!) development tool for designing and creating your own blogs.
  • TypePad - Similar to MovableType (also free!)
  • Manila - Complete content management system creation software (not free to schools) for websites, blogs etc.

Educational Blog Resources

  • Educational Bloggers Network - Tons of resources on blogging and other educational technology topics.
  • weblogg-ed - A great blog especially about blogs in education. Lots of resources and examples.
  • Blogging Across the Curriculum - Educational blogs and resources from a college English professor.
  • EdBlogger Praxis - Links to lots of educational blogs as well as an insightful blog on educational uses of blogs.
  • eduBlognews - Another great blog about blogs in education. Links to lots of educational blogs.
  • Blog History - This blog entry from a pioneer blogger details the origins and history of blogging.
  • Blogging and RSS - Excellent article discussing the potential and power of blogging and RSS for educators.

Wiki Resources

  • pmWiki - An open source (free) wiki package that is reasonably easy to set up. You do need server space and a working knowledge of FTP. I got one up and running in about 10 minutes (not my ususal with new technologies!)
